Equine Protozoa Myelitis

Test for EPM Now

Equine protozoa myelitis (EPM) is a neurological condition of horses that causes, usually rear leg lameness or in lesser cases, total paralysis which leads to death or euthanasia.

The tests available for detecting this condition are dubious at best as there are as many false positives as there are false negatives. Therefore the final diagnosis is on the shoulders of the attending veterinarian to determine if this condition is the cause or whether a similar condition is the cause. Therefore, if someone says that their test is the correct test and can detect all cases, seek another opinion as this one would be incorrect in at least 50% of the cases.

Treatment itself, and there are several out there, presents its own delimma as no treatment protocol is highly successful nor financially desirable as any method will cost several hundred dollars. Therefore the proper treatment is in the hands of the attending veterinarian.

Should you have any further questions, call us, we’ll be happy to help you.
