Leptospirosis

Protect Your Dog Against Leptospirosis

This is a disease of dogs caused by a bacteria that is carried by both domestic and wild animals. It usually affects a dog suddenly with bloody urine, fever and an increase in white blood cells. Even with intensive treatment of antibiotics, fluids and even blood transfusions, it is difficult to save these dogs.

Recently, there have been reports not to vaccinate dogs for lepto due to some reactions that have been experienced. Due to this unwarranted discontinuance of this vaccine, letptospirosis is creeping back into the dog population and causing problems again.

Even if a dog has a reaction, it can be treated by antihistamines and steroids and no further problem is experienced. If a dog has had a past history of reactions, a pre treatment with these drugs can prevent such a reaction.

Therefore, when dogs of any age are due for vaccinations insist that your veterinarian inoculates your dog with this vaccine. It is necessary that we turn the tide on this disease that is slowly creeping back into the dog population.

Should you have any further questions, call us, we’ll be happy to help you.
